This morning I put them on a board and pounded out the starch, leaving the stringy portion of the roots. Then I poured the white powder into a jar for safe keeping.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; font-size: 12pt;\">In Ruined, Bekah ate cattails. I am now in the middle of the third and final book in the Fury series and again the protagonists are consuming this vegetable known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/sensiblesurvival.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/cattail-natures-wilderness-survival.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">supermarket of the wilderness<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. This site says to boil the starch out.\u00a0My research\u00a0also found a\u00a0site\u00a0that\u00a0said to dry the roots and pound them to remove the starch.\u00a0Of course, you want to wash them and peel the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macyplace.com\/RuinedFury\/Supplementary\/Image_CattailsPartiallyPeeled.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">outer black<\/span><\/span><\/a> , like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macyplace.com\/RuinedFury\/Supplementary\/Image_CattailsPrepared.jpg\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: medium;\">this<\/span><\/span><\/a>, before drying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So Sandy and I will be trying <em>something<\/em> with cattail starch. <em>Shhh!
