{"id":95,"date":"2013-11-15T20:25:58","date_gmt":"2013-11-15T20:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/macyplace.com\/tom\/blog\/?p=95"},"modified":"2013-11-15T20:25:58","modified_gmt":"2013-11-15T20:25:58","slug":"slavery-divides-baptists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tom.macyplace.com\/Blog\/index.php\/2013\/11\/15\/slavery-divides-baptists\/","title":{"rendered":"Slavery Divides Baptists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pastortim.org\/baptistbeacon\/2001\/eighteenth-century-baptists-tim-binion.htm\">Baptist Beacon<\/a>, I found the following summary. \u201cIn 1785 the Baptist General Committee of Virginia pronounced slavery \u2018contrary to the word of God.\u2019 Two years later the Ketockton Association called it \u2018a breach of divine law.\u2019 In 1790 the General Committee of Virginia adopted a statement calling slavery \u2018a violent deprivation of the rights of nature, and inconsistent with a republican government; and therefore (we) recommend it to our brethren to make use of every legal measure, to extirpate the horrid evil from the land.\u2019 By 1840 Northern Baptists and Southern Baptists disagreed over the issue with the southerners supporting the institution of slavery. Virginia Baptists called Baptists of the south to a meeting in Georgia\u2026. Since 1845 we were no longer just \u2018Baptists\u2019 but \u2018Northern\u2019 and \u2018Southern Baptists\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corporate views changed dramatically in the south during the first half of the 19th century. As Baptists in the south dealt with the issue of slavery, some no doubt wavered in their acceptance of the practice when confronted face to face with its reality. Can people be property? How would you have reacted to a socially accepted belief (some arguments for slavery can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macyplace.com\/coyf\/Supplementary\/1845-SupplInfo\/RTF_Arguments%20for%20Slavery.rtf\">here<\/a>) when your personal experience called it into question?
